Other information resources include a searchable database of agroforestry-related activities by US and Canadian institutions, searchable index of papers presented at all North American Agroforestry Conferences, and listings of new websites, publications and meetings of interest to agroforesters. Update on First World Congress of Agroforestry http://conference.ifas.ufl.edu/wca/newsletters/1stworldcongress2.htm The First World Congress of Agroforestry, June 27- July 2, 2004 in Orlando, Florida will be an event of international significance for the agroforestry community. Visit the link above to read the latest Congress newsletter and find the most current information. Canadian University Offers First French Agroforestry Degree www.cuslm.ca/agroforesterie.pdf The Faculty of Forestry at the Universite de Moncton in Edmundston, New Brunswick, Canada will offer the first French-language undergraduate degree course in agroforestry in North America, starting in 2004. The five year course of study is designed to prepare students for international work in temperate or tropical climates. More information is available (in French) at www.umce.ca/foresterie. USDA Publishes Proposed Rule for Conservation Security Program www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/farmbill/2002/pdf/cspsummary.pdf www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/farmbill/2002/pdf/cspfact.pdf USDA has released the proposed rule for the Conservation Security Program created by the 2002 Farm Bill. This new program rewards producers who pro-actively adopt conservation practices, including (in states where available) alley cropping, riparian buffers and windbreaks. The links above point to a summary of the proposed rule and also a factsheet on CSP; more information is also available on the NRCS site. Written comments on the proposed rule are invited for 60 days; see the factsheet for details. Funding Slashed for Forest Land Enhancement Program www.fs.fed.us/spf/coop/programs/loa/flep.shtml Private forestland owners may lose a significant funding opportunity originally intended to encourage sustainable forest management, including forest farming and silvopasture agroforestry. Money allocated for the new program was reduced to $10 million after $40 million of the original allocation was diverted to pay for fire fighting on federal lands. The cut in available funds will not affect landowners approved for cost-share projects in 2003, but will reduce or eliminate new landowner participation in 2004 and beyond. USDA Buffer Initiative Surpasses 1.5 Million Miles Planted http://nacdnet.org/buffers/ The latest issue of "BufferNotes" chronicles the accomplishments of the USDA Buffer Initiative. As of November 30, 2003, the most recent report available, a total of 1,516,123 miles of buffers, or 5,458,041 acres, have been installed during the initiative. The majority of the miles in the initiative – 743,058 – have come under the continuous Conservation Reserve Program. That is equivalent to 2,675,010 acres. About 20 percent of the total, 539,538 acres, is from Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) enrollments. ================================================ SUBSCRIBE/UNSUBSCRIBE To Subscribe to the Agroforestry Newsline: www.aftaweb.org/resources1.php?page=7 Follow this link to our sign-up page, enter your name and email address and click one more time.
