The 2009 11th North American Agroforestry Conference: Call for Papers The 11th North American Agroforestry Conference of the Association for Temperate Agroforestry (AFTA) will be held May 31 – June 4, 2009 at the Stoney Creek Inn and Conference Center located in Columbia, Missouri. The conference, held by the University of Missouri Center for Agroforestry (UMCA), has made a first call for papers. Abstracts for oral presentations and poster presentations must be electronically submitted by November 1st, 2008. For more details pertaining to the conference, please visit the UMCA website (above). The 2009 2nd World Congress of Agroforestry The 2nd World Congress of Agroforestry will be held August 23rd-28th, 2009 in Nairobi, Kenya. Its theme will be “Agroforestry – The Future of Global Land Use”. The 2nd World Congress on Agroforestry will assess opportunities to leverage scientific agroforestry in promoting sustainable land use world wide. The Congress will be organized by ICRAF (World Agroforestry Centre) at the conference facilities of UNEP (UN Environment Programme). For more details, please see the Congress website (above). Short Rotation Crops International Conference The Center for Integrated Natural Resources and Agricultural Management (CINRAM) is hosting an international conference on short rotation crops August 18th-22nd in Bloomington, Minnesota. The goal of this conference is to initiate and provide opportunities for scientific exchange and full integration of the science and the application of producing both agricultural and forest crops for biofuels, bioenergy and bioproducts. There is a substantial global need for the development of such systems and technologies for the sustainability of short rotation crops across multiple spatial and temporal scales. This conference offers an international forum for discussion and scientific exchange of information. For more information, please visit the CINRAM website (above). Recent Agroforestry Bookshop Editions The Agroforester’s Bookshop is pleased to offer two new recent additions available for purchase. Toward Agroforestry Design edited by Shibu Jose and Andrew Gordon is an important reference for anyone interested in exploring or managing the physiological and ecological processes which underlie resource allocation and plant growth in agroforestry systems. Ecological Basis of Agroforestry by Daizy R. Batish et al. covers the practice of agroforestry in temperate and tropical regions and is applicable worldwide. Valuing Agroforestry Systems by Alavalapati and Mercer (2004) is still available at special discounted rate. This book presents the reader with 14 case studies that demonstrate and describe a wide range of economic analysis techniques for agroforestry systems.
