Latest Temperate Agroforester Published online The September 2006 issue has many interesting stories. It starts with a case study of temperate agroforestry in action in Australia. Then we go the Northeast US where we look at controlling undesirable and invasive species with goats in the woods. Included in this issue is a book review on silvopasture, as well as abstracts of recent peer reviewed papers in our field. In this issue we have two – one from China and one on biofuels. Finally, there is a short article on a new black walnut financial model. Call for Papers - the 2007 Agroforestry conference The deadline for presenters to submit abstracts for the conference is the end of October and approaching fast. Be sure to check the link for other important dates regarding the Quebec City conference. To find out more information about the 2007 conference, refer to the home website at Agroforestry conference. USDA awards Farmers Market Grants USDA has announced the award of 20 grants totaling $900,000 to establish, expand or promote local farmers markets, roadside stands, and similar agricultural ventures under the new Farmers Market Promotion Program. These grants will assist regional farmers’ markets authorities; local governments; nonprofit and economic development corporations; and tribal governments in 17 states in carrying out a variety of projects. A list of recipients, describing their projects, is available online. USDA Forest Service Announces New Biomass Grant Funds The USDA Forest Service, through the Woody Biomass Utilization Grant Program, is now accepting proposals for forest product projects that increase biomass utilization on Federal lands. The program is intended to help improve forest restoration activities by using and creating markets for small-diameter material and low-valued trees. The grants will help communities, entrepreneurs, and others turn residues from forest restoration activities into marketable forest products and/or energy products. At least $4 million is available for granting under this program. Individual grants will not be less than $50,000 or more than $250,000. Study released on Financial Incentive Programs for Non-Industrial Private Forest Landowners A study on financial incentive programs for non-industrial private forest owners conducted by the USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station, Utah State University, Pennsylvania State University, University of Minnesota, and Clemson University, has recently been completed. Data from the study has been complied on a new web site that provides access to information on cost-share, tax, and other financial incentive programs available to non-industrial private forest owners in each state. Bridging Borders toward Food Security In Vancouver, BC, Canada, the Community Food Security Coalition is holding its tenth annual meeting. The meeting will take place October 7th through October 12th, 2006. The agenda includes plenary sessions, workshops, meetings and receptions, as well as pre-conference field trips and short courses.
