Registration Opens for 2005 Agroforestry Conference

AFTA presents “Moving Agroforestry into the Mainstream,” the Ninth North American Agroforestry Conference, June 12-15, 2005 at Rochester, MN. Hosted by the University of Minnesota Center for Integrated Natural Resources and Agricultural Management (CINRAM), the conference will be an opportunity for learning about new agroforestry research, policy and practice. The lowest rates are available during early registration, now through January 31, 2005, after which rates will increase. Current AFTA members will receive a discount o­n either full or o­ne-day registration. Visit the conference website for details and to register o­nline or by mail.

Updated Agroforestry Activities Database

The o­nline database of agroforestry-related activities at institutions in the US and Canada that’s maintained by AFTA has recently been completely updated and reloaded. From the AFTA website, you can search the database to find basic information about agroforestry research, teaching and extension activities at 45 different universities and government departments. Searches can be done by keywords within the title or description, personnel, institution, location, activity type and agroforestry practice. This latest update was done mainly under a contract with the Appropriate Technology Transfer for Rural Areas (ATTRA) program, with funding from the Green Foundation.

Ginseng Fact Sheets

Three new fact sheets o­n “Growing American Ginseng in Ohio” have recently been published by Ohio State University Extension. Written by Chip Carroll of Rural Action and Dave Apsley, OSU Natural Resources Specialist, the publications describe the “wild-simulated” method of growing ginseng under natural shade of a hardwood forest. Topics include site selection, site preparation, planting and harvesting.

The Overstory Book, Second Edition

The Overstory Book: Cultivating Connections with Trees, Second Edition, collects the first six years of in-depth reports o­n a wide range of agroforestry-related topics originally published in the o­nline journal, The Overstory. The book is presented in a reader-friendly format that’s fully illustrated and indexed.It’s available in paperback, hardback or CD-ROM versions. Business Opportunities for Forest Landowners

A new book, Forest Landowner's Guide to Evaluating and Choosing a Natural Resource-Based Enterprise helps forest landowners identify and evaluate potential forest-based enterprises beyond wood products. Conservation Security Program 2005 Sign-Ups

USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service has announced new watersheds that are eligible for 2005 sign-ups under the Conservation Security Program (CSP). View the list of selected watersheds and other program information at the NRCS website http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/csp/. The Center for Rural Affairs offers a useful overview of CSP, Conservation Security Program Fact Sheet – Program Implementation, which describes basic producer eligibility criteria, tier levels, payment types and sign-up procedures.
