North American Agroforestry: An Integrated Science and Practice
Reviewed in The Temperate Agroforester, October 2000 During the 1970s and 1980s, agroforestry was a concept that had very little support. Now agroforestry has suddenly been recognized as a highly specialized technology. Because of the environmental consequences of agricultural and forestry practices that focused on the economic “bottom line,” the American public is now demanding greater accountability and the application of more ecologically and socially friendly management approaches. The contents of this book introduce you to a new and exciting field of study—one that has broad application in the agricultural community. The first few chapters focus on the development, ecological foundations, and the status of agroforestry. Separate chapters cover technical aspects of the five major agroforestry practices, namely windbreaks, silvopastures, alley cropping, riparian forest buffers, and forest farming. Each is unique, and is interdisciplinary in purpose and operation. These systems are evaluated in later chapters that integrate the socioeconomic factors and project the future of agroforestry.
